Alex Spencer

Call: 2023

Alex is a barrister and a chartered tax adviser (CTA).

He obtained a double first in his undergraduate degree in Classics at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and a distinction in each of the PGDL (law conversion course) and BTC (Bar Training Course).

Before coming to the bar, he worked for six years as a tax adviser in two ‘Big 4’ accounting firms. His work during this period included direct and indirect tax planning, tax transaction due diligence and tax dispute resolution (through litigation and mediation). He also developed specialist practices in real estate tax, VAT and the taxation of luxury assets.

He has a growing practice at the bar comprising contentious and non-contentious matters in all areas of tax law. His recent matters have involved limitation issues in the enforcement of National Insurance Contribution debts, personal liability notices for coronavirus support scheme payments, the classification of various supplies for VAT purposes, the charitable exemptions from charge in the Income Tax and Corporation Tax legislation, and the definition of relevant property for the purposes of business property relief in the IHT legislation.

He writes regularly and has contributed articles to the Field Court Tax Chambers Digest, AccountingWEB, TaxInsider, Tax Journal and the British Tax Review.

He completed his pupillage in chambers and became a tenant on 2 October 2024. Alex accepts instructions in all areas of taxation law, including from members of the public on a direct access basis. He is on the Attorney General’s ‘Junior junior’ civil panel of counsel.

Alex Spencer accepts instructions from professional clients as well as directly from members of the public under the direct access scheme. Alex charges for work on the basis of a fixed fee or hourly rate. Professional and Direct Access clients can obtain a quotation for legal service from one of our Practice Managers ([email protected]). Additional contact details can be found on the Contact page.

The Practice Managers are also able to provide an indication of how long a particular piece of work is likely to take. Alex will always endeavour to meet a client’s timescale, but this will naturally depend on the amount of work involved and existing commitments (in particular if he is involved in court proceedings). Alex or the Practice Managers will be able to advise of any likely problem in meeting a deadline.

Alex always aims to provide the best possible service. However, if at any point you become unhappy or concerned about his (or Chambers) services, you should inform us as soon as possible. Details of our complaints procedure, together with details about making complaints to the Legal Ombudsman, can be found here.

Alex is regulated by the Bar Standards Board. The Barrister’s Register on the BSB’s website can be found here.
